'THE GOOD OIL' - Homemade Sunscreen

 Oi, listen very carefully to the following (or just read it in a forceful sort-of way):

I AM NOT SUGGESTING TO STOP USING TRADITIONAL SUNSCREEN. UNDERSTAND IN NO UNCERTAIN TERMS THAT IF YOU DECIDE TO STOP USING IT AND THEN EXPOSE YOURSELF TO THE SUN, YOU ARE AN IMBECILE.

A brief prelude:

Conspiracy theorists and hippies hypothesize that commercial sunscreen is bad for you, and you're better off chancing it in the sun.

As you might guess, this is utter nonsense.

I did the research and here's the nuts and bolts of the discussion:

Essentially there is concern over 'nanoparticles' present in Banana Boat et al. Nanoparticles are particles small enough to pass through our cell membranes, membranes biologically designed to filter chemicals and keep bad stuff out of our bodies. But here's the rub (smell that sweet #pun) - we don't even know if these particular nanoparticles are actually dangerous to us! The conspiracists' argument is that if they are, we have no defence.

Thus, my recommendation is as follows: rather than proclaim that "big pharma is possibly trying to hurt us", remember that without sunscreen during prolonged exposure, the sun will definitely hurt you. Don't be a dope, use sunscreen.

Alright boring stuff over with - this homemade paste is the business and will turbo-charge your protection whilst el sol burns bright.

I've made it a few times and it works well. This particular batch I made more as a facial zinc for the surf. It's super water-resistant and full of good stuff that your skin will love.

INGREDIENTS

- Beeswax (50g or so)
 - Shea butter (cuppla tablespoons)
 - Almond oil (1/2 cup)
 - Coconut oil (1/4 cup)
 - Red raspberry seed oil (cuppla teaspoons)
 - Vanilla extract (teaspoon or so)
 - Non-nano zinc oxide powder (2 measured tablespoons)
 - Finely ground coffee (20g or so)

METHOD

Chuck everything together in a heatproof mixing bowl, sitting in simmering water over a saucepan. When its melted, stir it all together then turn the heat off. Carefully add the zinc oxide powder. As earlier, read the following very slowly - do not breathe it in! Wrap a tea towel around your noggin if you have to, it will protect your lungs and amplify any Heisenberg-esque feelings that may have arisen during your 'cook'.

Keep stirring as it cools down. The various oils will solidify at different rates and separate the zinc, so for a smooth, even mixture you gotta keep it moving. When it's still liquid but almost fully cooled (it will have thickened up heaps) pour it into a container of some description. Then forget whatever you had planned for the next little while and begin what is a somewhat tedious - but very worthwhile - cleanup.

Quantities of everything apart from the zinc oxide powder can be modified to personal preference. Less beeswax/coconut oil will make a runnier mixture. This recipe is pretty thick as I like a proper paste to sit atop my skin whilst I meander in the ocean for hours on end pondering my existence.

Hardcore purists claim that many everyday ingredients contain natural SPF (sun-protection factor). Whilst this is true of the natural contents in this recipe, the zinc oxide powder is absolutely critical to offer genuine protection from the sun. Do some research of your own, the science is really interesting and there are some horror stories to be aware of before you slap on some virgin coconut oil and consider yourself 'prepared' for a day at the beach.

Australia is the lucky country but the sun is a proper brute! So like I said, I'd recommend this mainly as a supplement to the sunscreen you are (hopefully) already using.
